Community Outreach
| GSA Networking |
In the Fall of 1993, Positive Images presented at a faculty in-service at Santa Rosa High School with PFLAG and Sonoma County Project 10. Fourteen faculty members stood up to say they would be advocates for queer youth on that campus, which led to the formation of the GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) at Santa Rosa High School. In its beginning it called itself the "United Sexualities Club". Now in its 10th year, it has been renamed the "Santa Rosa High GSA." P.I. is very committed to supporting and mentoring GSA's throughout Sonoma County. This includes: mentoring on starting a club, doing campus outreach, appropriate flyers and bulletin announcements, and "how to" keep the club dynamic and thriving. Another of our GSA networking efforts involves hosting youth dances, which are open to all queer and queer-friendly youth. They are often held around Valentine's Day, Halloween, or whenever enthusiasm among the members moves them to come together and organize any dance! |
| Speakers |
Panel presentations take place when Positive Images receives an invitation to educate and inform a class, organization, or agency on issues pertinent to the GLBTQQ community. These panels consist of P.I. members who are "out", and want to speak about their "coming out" and survival process within a homophobic culture. At times, P.I. will be joined by members of PFLAG [Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays], when a parent perspective is also desired. Handouts with statistics relating to queer youth suicide, addiction, and high school dropout rates, as well as the PI brochure are all made available for each audience. Ample time is always left for dialoguing with the audience, to address their issues and concerns. |
| Pride Month |
Gay pride month [June] activities have been a vital interest and commitment for Positive Images throughout our history. In our first year (1990), we marched in Sonoma County's first Gay Pride parade, as well as joining LYRIC [Lavender Youth Recreation and Information Center] in San Francisco's parade. We haven't missed a year or parade since. Participation in Pride parades and festivals is a definite statement of our organization's presence, outreach, esteem and risk to participate with the greater Sonoma County community. This visibility is a vital aspect of community-building for youth and young adults. As P.I. co-founder Jim Foster says, "You can't help but feel good about declaring who you are when marching down the street and carrying the P.I. banner. This is a very powerful act in countering any shame." |
| Conferences |
Young ,Loud & Proud and OHMY (Overcoming Homophobia Meeting for Youth) are annual Gay youth activist conferences hosted by LYRIC - San Francisco. P.I. has been a regular participant in these events as attendees and presenters. We have put on workshops such as "Starting and Maintaining Effective GSA's," as well as more specific presentations, such as "Here, Queer and Jewish" by our own Maayan Simon at the 2003 OHMY conference. Every year, CAPP (California Association of Peer Programs) hosts a statewide conference for those high school students involved with peer counseling, leadership activities and service programs. For P.I. it is an essential opportunity for outreach and networking, due to a high demand from many schools for information pertaining to GLBTQQ youth. This audience in particular wants to know about starting GSA clubs, or simply how to help students who dare to come out on the high school campus. Furthermore, a significant number of peer counselors are gay themselves, so the conference can be an opportunity for them to reach out, if their school doesn't have any queer-friendly resources in place yet. Positive Images has attended the last 8 CAPP conferences, whose location alternates from Southern to Northern California each year. |
| IMAGES magazine |
Published bi-annually, IMAGES magazine is a statement of the current pulse and tenor of Positive Images. Members express issues that are significant to them through prose, editorial commentary, essay, art, and photography. These expressions will range from humor to sadness, anger to joy and shame to pride. Along with its role in portraying queer youth culture in literary form, IMAGES is a major outreach and fundraising source for the P.I. organization. Included with each issue is a form inviting readers to consider making a contribution of time and/or funds to help P.I. continue its many outreach activities. |
